It takes more than luck to reach the goals you set for yourself. Discipline and hard work go hand in hand to make your dreams a reality. Many people believe that discipline is something you are born with, but it’s actually a learned skill. It’s a skill that takes practice and needs to be continually reinforced every day. Learning to master discipline is no easy task, but these tips will put you on the path to success.

1. Define a Clear Long-Term Goal

What’s the end goal of what you are doing? Why are you doing this in the first place? Figure that out and each day will be a step towards your goal’s completion.

2. Establish a Weekly Routine

Set up a daily schedule with the hours you will work. i.e. 7pm-9pm every weekday. Once your schedule is set, don’t break it for anything!

3. Get Rid Of Those Distractions!

Turn off your phone, mute the TV, get off Facebook and everything social. Stop getting distracted!

Before you start working, clear off your workspace and put everything you’ll need within arms reach. Spending time digging through a mess wastes valuable time and mental energy.

If you’re working on a large project, break it up into smaller pieces. Completing the smaller pieces will keep the project from seeming overwhelming and give you a way to measure your progress.

Working within a time crunch helps you focus and get work done faster. Set time “blocks” of 30 minutes to an hour with a short 5 or 10 minute break in between. A free online timer I use for time blocking is Timer-Tab.

7. Schedule Breaks and Days Off

To prevent yourself from burning out, make sure you schedule some time to unwind and relax. Pushing yourself too hard can lead to not just productivity problems, but health issues as well.

8. Exercise Daily

Add a 30 minute or more workout to your daily routine. It doesn’t have to be super intense, a simple walk around the block or a jog is fine. Daily exercise helps regulate health, emotions and stress levels.

9. Get Enough Sleep

Make sure you are getting enough sleep. Getting a full night’s rest will improve your concentration, memory, and problem-solving skills. Sleep also has health benefits for your immune system.

10. Don’t Get Discouraged. Keep at it and Don’t Stop!
