In the heart of Los Angeles’ Koreatown district lies The Line Hotel. At first glance the 12-story, 388-room hotel blends in with it’s concrete jungle surroundings. Tall buildings, offices, shops and malls, as far as the eye can see… but take the elevator to the rooftop and it’s a whole different story.

When you arrive at the roof you’ll be greeted by a 1,700 sq. ft. greenhouse. Welcome to the Commissary! Roy Choi, the co-owner of the restaurant/bar has created a space modeled after a greenhouse that offers food and drink with a focus on natural ingredients.

“My idea was to capture the feeling of a working greenhouse, without looking overly staged or themed.” – Roy Choi

Being located on the roof has it’s perks, the building gets plenty of sunlight from the windows and offers guests a place to relax by the pool while enjoying drinks infused with healthy ingredients.

Fresh greenery is never hard to come by in the Commissary, the ceilings are draped in hanging ivy, cyclamens, and ferns.

The natural setting of the greenhouse is not just reflected in the design of the interior, but also in the food and drinks at the bar. Matthew Biancaniello specializes in farmers market ingredients and creates drinks that involve a long list of natural veggies and fruits including rhubarb, cucumber, shiso, ginger, beets, carrots, pineapple, and watermelon.

Many of the decorations are setup to look “as if the gardener left them behind” and throughout the restaurant you will find gardening gloves, hats and other tools.

The Commissary restaurant is an excellent example of design with purpose. More than just being an attractive building to look at, the Commissary provides people with a place to unwind from their busy lifestyle and gives them a much needed opportunity to reconnect with nature.
