I stumbled across “TINY: A Story About Living Small” a couple months ago while perusing Netflix. I had heard of “tiny houses” in the past, but never took them too seriously. (They are just little houses… right?) Wrong! This documentary changed my outlook on these little structures and opened my eyes to what it’s really all about. “TINY” takes an in-depth look at the motivations behind the people who create these tiny houses and how it affects their day to day lives. What at first I thought was a novelty, turned out to be a part of a bigger picture with an end goal aimed at removing material possessions to focus on relationships. Christopher Smith Tiny House The movie follows Christopher Smith who decides to build a tiny house (with no prior construction experience) for himself in a wide empty expanse of land he purchased in Hartsel, CO. In addition to Christopher, the documentary interviews some of the leading voices behind the Tiny House Movement and provides backstories of “everyday people” who have chosen the tiny house way of life. Below are a few people that are interviewed throughout the movie. (I’ve also included the size of the tiny houses they live in.) Many of them actually have books and blogs, so be sure to check out their work when you finish reading this post!

I highly recommend giving this movie a shot. Even if you aren’t interested in living in a tiny house, you’ll still be inspired by this alternative way of living.
